The Kangaroo Defense, or Keres Defense, is a chess opening characterized by the opening moves 1. d4 e6 2. c4 Bb4+ (in algebraic notation). White can respond 3.Nc3, 3.Nd2 or 3.Bd2 (the only other legal move, 3. Qd2?! is considered somewhat dubious.) Black generally then captures the interposing piece, or plays 3...Qe7, 3...c5, 3...a5, or 3...f5. The game often transposes to a Dutch Defense, a Nimzo-Indian Defense or a Bogo-Indian Defense.
