Wade Defense

The Wade Defense or Rat Defense is a highly transpositional opening in chess. It is characterized by the immediate 1.d4 d6. It is the 5th most common move in response to d4. The opening can transpose into several openings after 2.e4 including the Philidor Defense after 2.e4 e5, the Pirc Defense after 2.e4 Nf6, and the Robatsch Defense after 2.e4 g6. Other transposition possiblities include the Old Indian Defense after 2.c4 Nf6 and the King's Indian Defense after 2.c4 g6 3.Nf3 Nf6. Despite this there are unique lines such as 1.d4 d6 2.Nf3 Bg4.
